Research Before You Design: How to Avoid Solving the Wrong Problem

Fast design without discovery is just expensive guessing. As a Product & UX Designer, I’ve learned the hard way: a beautiful solution to the wrong problem still wastes weeks — it just wastes them more confidently.
The fix isn’t a six-week research theater. It’s a tight loop: one primary job-to-be-done, five targeted conversations (or moderated tests), a friction matrix ranked by severity × reach, then a prototype that answers only those frictions.
When that prototype survives a quick usability pass, then — and only then — do I polish. Handoff is faster, and arguments about opinions get shorter, when the interaction model is already proven.
If you’re hiring a Product & UX Designer, ask this in the interview: “What did you refuse to design until research cleared it?” The answer tells you more than a Figma portfolio ever will.
